Manchester United have now set their sights on Rúben Dias amid their continued hunt for a new centre-half, with the club sending a scout to watch the Portugal international on Wednesday.
The Benfica defender has a release clause of €66m and his club are reportedly looking to get at least this amount for the player, with United understood to have inquired about the possibility of him going for less.
Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha, via Sport Witness, have confirmed that United scouts were at Benfica’s pre-season game against Anderlecht this week and are now interested in tabling a bid for Dias. Benfica are hoping the highly coveted defender will sign an improved contract to set his release clause at €88m, in the hope of receiving more money for a player in high demand. Dias helped his side to the Primera Liga title last year, pipping rivals Porto to the trophy, as well as scoring three goals in 32 league games as a defender.
The Red Devils may be looking into the possibility of signing Dias after recent attempts to sign Harry Maguire have stalled, and the 22-year-old would cost significantly less than the £80m Leicester City are reportedly demanding.
Another alternative being touted is that United may be looking for him as a replacement for Victor Lindelöf, with the Swede’s agent confirming interest in his client from a ‘top European club’ this week. The Catalan club are thought to be turning their intentions to Lindelöf after seemingly missing out on Matthijs de Ligt to Juventus, however, any interest shown is set to be rebuffed by United, who will not be interested in selling one of their best performers from last season.
