During the summer, it was widely reported that Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær had identified Jadon Sancho as a transfer target to bolster his attacking options, a report that has now been confirmed by Borussia Dortmund.
A move for the 19-year-old never materialised and the door was closed early in the summer leading to questions about the legitimacy of the story, however, in an Amazon Prime documentary following the German club, Sporting Director Michael Zorc reveals negotiations did indeed take place.
Still yet to turn 20, Sancho has seriously impressed since his move to the Bundesliga from Manchester City, contributing to 13 goals and 19 assists in 43 games last season.
Such impressive displays incidentally did spark interest from Old Trafford, as Zorc confirmed on ‘Inside Borussia Dortmund’, saying: “A hot topic right now is Sancho and Manchester United. Both his discussions with the club and mine with the consultants. A meeting did take place. United invited the consultant.”
“But according to what I know, the consultant told the club that no matter how much money they offer, we won’t let him go this summer. ‘But the player also has no intention of taking that step this summer.”
With the Red Devils crying out for a right-sided winger for the last few years, Sancho seems the perfect target. Daniel James has shown his effectiveness from the left, and Sancho fits Solskjær’s young, hungry, British profile perfectly. His addition to United would offer some much-needed flair ton the right, but with the player having signed a contract extension in Germany until 2022, any move for the Three Lions ace should see Ed Woodward dig deep into the club’s pockets.
