The report says Leicester City have now accepted an increased bid for the England international, which will see United pay £60m up-front, with £20m in add-ons.
Earlier this week, it was also reported Maguire had ‘angrily confronted’ the Foxes after they priced him out a move to United, quoting Matthijs de Ligt’s £56m switch from Ajax to Juventus to show that Leicester’s valuation of him was far too high.
The Red Devils had a £70m bid rejected for Maguire earlier this month and should the full £80m fee be paid from the accepted offer, the move will eclipse Virgil van Dijk’s £75m move to Liverpool, one which later bought the Champions League trophy to Anfield.
Arch-rivals Manchester City were also said to be interested in signing Maguire this summer, but if the story is to be believed, United have beaten Pep Guardiola’s side to the 26-year-old. Maguire has previously worked with United assistant manager Mike Phelan before during their time at Hull City together and the club’s chase of the Three Lions centre-back could be partly down to Phelan’s advice.
