Transfer speculation surrounding Romelu Lukaku and a possible move to Inter Milan was further ignited on Wednesday after the forward was left out of the Manchester United squad in their 4-0 win over Leeds United.
This comes 24 hours after it was reported that Inter Milan are ready to make an improved bid for Lukaku later this week, thought to be an offer of £60m plus add-ons, according to Sky Sports.
The Nerazzurri saw their initial proposal of a two-year loan deal turned down last week in a meeting with United officials. A second bid is expected and is thought to be a similar deal in terms of staggered payments, but this time it will be for a permanent move with a larger up-front sum.
Lukaku has now been absent for both of United’s opening pre-season tour matches, having missed their 2-0 victory against Perth Glory on Saturday. The Belgium international was expected to feature against Leeds, however, during manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s pre-match comments he confirmed that Lukaku – as well as other absentees – were “not ready”, with MUTV reporting the forward had picked up a knock.
The potential issue for Solskjær if this drags out further will be the lack of time he may have to find a replacement for Lukaku if he were to leave. So far the only other striker linked to a move to Old Trafford has been Sevilla’s Wissam Ben Yedder, though this doesn’t seem to have materialised into anything other than rumours.
Coincidentally, United’s next game on their pre-season tour sees them up against Inter Milan on Saturday in what could be an intriguing game for Lukaku. The 26-year-old will no doubt want to be involved and will hope to further convince Inter coach, Antonio Conte, that he is worth the £75m+ United are holding out for.
