Summer-signing Harry Maguire has revealed his delight at joining Manchester United, despite not having the best of starts in terms of results since arriving at Old Trafford.

Maguire, who was also chased by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, signed a six-year contract at United and in doing so, became the most expensive defender in history.

Speaking ahead of United’s Europa League tie in Belgrade, Maguire told reporters, as quoted by Goal, that he aims to be at the club for a long time coming, saying: “I’m enjoying being part of such a big club. I’m going to be part of this club for the future. I signed a long-term contract here, so I knew I was coming in straight away and aiming to bridge the gap to the top two in the Premier League. I’m looking forward to progressing in the future and I want to be part of that.”

“When you sign for a club like Man United, you want to play in the biggest games possible. Playing in Europe is another challenge. It’s something I’m looking forward to, something I’m relishing,” Maguire added.

“I want to play in the biggest games with the biggest pressure and that’s why I signed for a club like Man United, one of the biggest in the world. I’m looking forward to challenging myself under the lights in European football.”

The 26-year-old also told reporters that should incidents of racism happen from Bulgarian fans in attendance as it did in Sofia when England travelled there earlier this month, United players will trust UEFA to follow the same protocol that saw Bulgarian hooligans thrown out of attendance as the Three Lions ran riot, winning 6-0.

“We will trust UEFA to follow their protocol. Sofia was a sickening atmosphere, something I don’t want to be part of again,” Magure said.

“We’re positive tomorrow night will be a great atmosphere, one we’re all looking forward to playing in. If something does goes off, then we’ll follow the three-step protocol and I’m sure there will be people on and off the pitch doing their bit to make things better for the future.”
