Bruno Fernandes’ agent flew to London on Wednesday to meet with Manchester United officials in the hope of finalising a deal for the Portuguese midfielder.
Fernandes is a major transfer target for United this summer, though reportedly the club face competition from fellow rivals Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
United and Spurs appear to be in the hot seat though, with the player’s agent Miguel Pinho also said to have met with Spurs representatives in the capital according to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, via Sport Witness.
Sporting Lisbon are reportedly hoping for a fee in the region of €70million for a player who last season scored 32 goals and assisted a further 18 in all competitions.
United are looking to strengthen in midfield, particularly after Ander Herrera left on a free, and the 24-year-old would be a welcome addition to a midfield sorely lacking in creativity. This burden was largely left to Paul Pogba last season, who’s future still remains in the balance, though Fernandes is seen as someone to help share the load of responsibility, rather than replace the World Cup winner.
Fred, Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira do not offer enough goals from the midfield, and recent performances from Nemanja Matic suggest the Serb is reaching the twilight years of his career.
Fernandes dropped a hint that he was looking to leave the club recently, writing a post on his Instagram page that seemed to suggest his stellar season with The Lions may have been his last. He said: “Thank you all for your contribution. Without you, this wouldn’t be possible.”
The Red Devils certainly have a good track record when it comes to signing Portuguese talent from Sporting, if they manage to secure Fernandes’ signature, he may yet follow in their footsteps.
