Gianluigi Donnarumma has been linked with a move to Old Trafford with the future of Manchester United shot-stopper David De Gea still in doubt with the Spaniard yet to extend his stay with the club.
De Gea is capable of leaving United on a free transfer next year and with international companion Ander Herrera leaving the club and Juan Mata also likely to move on, the 28-year-old’s chances of extending look slim.
Italian outlet Il Corriere della Sera report that AC Milan’s Donnarumma is being chased by United to replace De Gea, having previously been linked with the 20-year-old in 2017 after he reportedly asked agent Mino Raiola to secure him a move elsewhere, an act that left him facing heavy criticism from fans.
Manager Gennaro Gattuso recently left the club after failing to qualify for the Champions League and Paulo Maldini, a club legend, is also reportedly considering his involvement with the club at board level.
Should Donnarumma be sold, a fee in the region of £50million is expected to secure the Italian’s services, which seems a very good price for a 20-year-old first-team regular who has twelve caps for his country. His agent, Raiola, is also said to be in talks with United already for Ajax sensation Matthijs de Ligt.
The signing of Donnarumma would be one of multiple big signings expected for Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side this summer, with a major overhaul expected from fans given the definite departures of players such as Herrera and Valencia, whilst the futures of De Gea, Pogba, Lukaku and Sánchez among others still remain unsolved.
United have just over a month before jetting off for the pre-season tour in July, and Solskjær is said to have requested that CEO Ed Woodward completes all business beforehand, though no player has arrived or departed as of yet. Woodward faces the potential of the biggest backlash yet should he fail to secure the targets to allow United to compete next season, especially with the pain of Manchester City winning the Premier League and Liverpool claiming their sixth Champions League on Saturday night.
