Paris Saint-Germain have moved closer to the signing of Matthijs de Ligt with the Ajax man’s agent Mino Raiola set to travel to France this week to close a potential deal with the Ligue 1 champions, according to reports.
Manchester United have been widely linked with de Ligt since the end of the season, however, the chase for the Dutchman’s signature has now become a two-horse race between Barcelona and PSG, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.
The deal is expected to accelerate once Leonardo Araújo is officially appointed as Sporting Director at the Parisian club, with current negotiations going through Antero Henrique. Leonardo will replace Henrique in what will be his second spell at the club in the role, having helped turn PSG into a European powerhouse back in 2011-2013, playing a key role in Zlatan Ibrahimović’s move to the Parc des Princes.
In Spain, Marca say Barcelona are losing patience with de Ligt after agreeing a deal with Ajax to sign the 19-year-old more than a month ago, and their frustration grows with the defender after believing a move to Camp Nou was his preferred destination.
With United said to be out of the race, attention has turned to Leicester City’s Harry Maguire but the Foxes are demanding a fee in the region of £80m, more than Ajax’s valuation of de Ligt. It remains to be seen how Ed Woodward will respond to missing out on his number one defensive target and the pressure is already rising on the CEO.
