Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has been given the number nine shirt following Romelu Lukaku’s departure to Inter Milan.
The Frenchman had worn the number before Zlatan Ibrahimović’s arrival in 2016 and after the Swede opted for Martial’s number, it forced the former AS Monaco forward into wearing eleven.
Martial was believed to have trademarked his initials and number beforehand and also branded his social media accounts with the number, something he has kept in-tact.
After it was snatched from him, a drop in-form and his happiness at Old Trafford took a huge hit, bringing fans to request Martial had the number returned if Lukaku was to leave United this summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjær plans to use Martial as a centre-forward, alternating with Marcus Rashford, shown in United’s pre-season fixtures, making the decision to give the 23-year-old the shirt a no brainer.

Fans will be hoping the return of the shirt Martial wore in his debut season in Manchester as a 19-year-old brings the same form he arrived with, scoring 18 goals and recording 11 assists in 56 appearances.
The club have also confirmed that Mason Greenwood will wear 26, Angel Gomes takes 28, new defensive additions Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will wear 5 and 29 respectively whilst Daniel James takes the number 21.
